Descubrimientos recientes en el tratamiento y control de la oncocercosis en el Ecuador

Resumen

Se discute el tratamiento de oncocercosis usando el diethylcarbamazine y el suramin sodium, los cuales pueden eliminar el parásito Onchocerca volvulus en diferentes etapas. Debido a que recientes estudios han demostrado la seria limitación de estas dos drogas, sü uso no puede ser recomendado para tratamiento en masa. De las nuevas clases de componentes que están siendo analizados (los benzimidozoles y las avermectinas), la droga invermectina ofrece las mejores posibilidades de seguridad'y efectividad. En Ecuador, la nodulectomía ha probado ser una positiva medida en un intento de controlar la enfermedad. Se discute el posible papel de los amino—quinolines como agente quimioterapéutico contra la oncocercosis.! Revista dé la FaCüitád de Ciéncias Médicas (Quito, 12: 83, 1987).
