ANÁLISIS BIOGEOGRÁFICO DE M elocactu s b ellav isten sis EN LA REGIÓN SUR DEL ECUADOR: ASPECTOS TAXONÓM ICOS, DISTRIBUCIÓN Y CONSERVACIÓN

Abstract

We present the result of an extensive study on the distribution and biogeography of a species of cacti most striking and least known in the southern region of Ecuador, Melocactus bellavistensis. We performed a thorough review of its taxonomy, including an updated identification key, and present a hypothesis about its possible origin and dispersion in South America. We analyze its condition and identify some alternative strategies to ensure its long-term survival.
