Ecuador's deep and prolonged economic crisis has given rise, especially since the 1980s, to a process of societal destructuring that has increasingly and systematically blocked the country's socioeconomic reproduction. The roots of this process are to be found in the biased industrialization by import substitution, underway since the mid-sixties, and in the country's ancestral form of insertion in the world economy, as a producer and exporter of raw materials.
