Abstract

The U.S. government, through financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, promoted the implementation of "free market economies" in both developing countries and industrialized states. Supporters of "free market economies" believe that the market is the engine of economic development and that any state intervention is detrimental.
