Abstract

The extraordinary development of the productive forces that took place between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries was projected from the sphere of production to that of exchange, definitively consolidating the international division of labor. In this context, a number of former colonies began to boost their trade based on the export of the primary sector and the import of manufactured goods. These countries defined an outward-looking development model dependent on the central economies of the world capitalist system, which was specified in terms of the interrelation of internal and external factors determining a certain form of linkage to the world market.
