Abstract
The agricultural sector within the Ecuadorian economy has been of great importance from different points of view. The participation of this sector in the gross domestic product (GDP), according to estimates of the Central Bank of Ecuador, was of the order of 37.5 percent in 1963, from which it has been gradually decreasing until reaching about one third of GDP in 1966; this decrease in the relative contribution to GDP is due to reasons of stagnation of agricultural activity in recent years, motivated by structural and institutional factors that have constituted serious limitations for the agricultural development of the country.
