Economic Impact of Forestry in Colombia: Trends and Regional Effects between 2013 and 2023
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the last decade, the Colombian forestry sector has experienced a notable boom, driven by growing demand for wood, support from public policies, and greater awareness about the importance of forests for sustainable development. The objective of this study was to analyze the economic impact of forestry in Colombia during the period 2013-2023. To do this, a quantitative methodology was used that used official data. The methods included the analysis of wood production, employment generated, income and value added to the agricultural sector in the Amazon, Pacific, Andean and Caribbean regions. The results showed a sustained growth in wood production at an average annual rate of 4.25%, with a positive impact on the generation of employment, income and added value to the agricultural sector. The conclusions highlight that sustainable forestry is an effective tool to promote regional development in Colombia, generating significant economic, social and environmental benefits for local communities and the country in general. The study suggests that, to maximize the positive impact of the sector, it is crucial to strengthen public policies, promote investment and encourage research in forestry.
