Abstract

The prevailing development pattern in Ecuador is a result of the different ways in which the country was articulated to the socio-economic system of world domination. This pattern, fundamentally outward-oriented, affected the economy of the two main regions of the country in different ways; it first energized the Sierra, which in the colonial period and until the first decades of the Republic was the most thriving area.
