Abstract

In this essay it is addressed the relationship between poetry and communication. It is argued that in the nineteenth century the ideal communication that had dominated Western poetry is questioned and this questioning was expressed as an opposition between expression and communication. It reaches its highest point with the advent of Surrealism which underlies one aesthetics and extreme lack of communication until now. Current Poetry therefore has lost its critical nature, that is the ability to recognize and raise vital issues affecting members of a society. It has focused on the development of purely formal variations, without any relation to the expressive needs of the community.
