Community integration and participation and their association with dating violence in adolescents

Introduction: Adolescence is a key developmental stage for the formation of social identity and the establishment of community bonds. Community participation and integration have been recognized as protective factors for psychosocial well-being; however, their relationship with adolescent dating violence has been scarcely explored in Latin American contexts.
Objective: To analyze levels of community participation and integration and their association with dating violence among Ecuadorian adolescents.
Material and Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with a sample of 686 adolescents selected through non-probability sampling. Validated instruments were used to assess community integration, community participation, and dating violence. The analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, binomial tests, and 95% confidence intervals.
Results: The adolescents exhibited low to moderate levels of integration and community participation. Significant prevalences of dating violence were identified, particularly emotional coercion (54.5%). Statistically significant associations were observed between low levels of integration (p = 0.012), community participation (p = 0.036), and the experience of dating violence, although with small effect sizes.
Discussion: Reduced levels of integration and community participation may be linked to greater experience of dating violence and less social support.
Conclusions: The findings suggest that weak community connectedness may be associated with increased vulnerability to dating violence during adolescence. These results reinforce the importance of strengthening community spaces as protective environments for adolescents.
