Existen numerosas técnicas quirúrgicas para tratar la obstrucción urinaria causada por el crecimiento prostático.
Alrededor de 1890 Belfield, Fuller y McGill reportaron sus experiencias con la Prostatectomía. La cirugía prostática se generalizó después de 1901 cuando Freyer describió la vía suprapúbica para la enucleación, en casos de agrandamiento de la Próstata. El problema frecuente que aparece durante y después de la cirugía es la hemorragia y ha dado lugar a numerosas técnicas para evitarla y combatirla, y va desde el taponamiento del lecho prostático, con el riesgo de una alta morbi-mortalidad, hasta complicadas maniobras quirúrgicas.
