Abstract

This article gives an account of the specificities of the process of conformation of nationalisms in the Spanish-American countries. For this purpose, it takes the model that Ernest Gellner proposed to explain, through a typology, the social situations that engender nationalism and the three resulting alternatives of nationalism. After explaining the aforementioned model, secondly, it reports on the processes occurring in the region, citing authors who have worked on the phenomenon, taking as an axis of organization the three elements that Benedict Anderson postulates to understand how nations are imagined. Finally, from the latter, it shows the explanatory limitations that the Gellner model has for our region.
