Abstract

The article examines the profound contemporary transformations—technological, scientific, cultural, and global—that reshape how society is understood and demand a renewal of the social sciences. Jácome emphasizes the crisis of the positivist paradigm and the rise of approaches that value subjectivity, social action, and complexity, requiring sociology to integrate macro-structural explanations with micro and interpretive perspectives. Within this framework, he reviews the trajectory of the School of Sociology at the Universidad Central del Ecuador, highlighting its historical role in promoting Latin American critical thought and its current academic reform aimed at combining classical and contemporary theories, strengthening research, and responding to the challenges of a globalized and rapidly changing society.
