“Modernities in architecture.” Call for proposals No. 26-2026
The journal Arquitectura y Sociedad (Architecture and Society) of the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the Central University of Ecuador invites authors to submit contributions to any of its four sections: Article, Essay, Project (Analysis/Description/Review), and Art and Design. Submissions may be based on the specific theme of this call for papers or on any theme within the scope of the journal.
No. 26 – 2026: “MODERNITIES IN ARCHITECTURE”
In this new call for papers for Arquitectura y Sociedad, corresponding to the second semester of 2026, authors are invited to reflect on modern architecture, in particular, and on architectural modernities, in general, based on the following questions: Is it possible to speak of modern architecture in societies considered non-modern? Can modern architecture be considered, stylistically, as a delimited framework with clearly defined formal characteristics reproducible in any geographical or political context, from which “anomalous,” “atypical,” or peripheral expressions must be excluded? How was the modern discourse of architecture configured, and what were its relationships with its social, cultural, political, economic, formal, and technical dimensions? Did the beginning of modern architecture respond to ideological positions and progressive debates, or was it assimilated as a “stylistic” renewal in response to economic limitations? Were there any connections between local architects and the European avant-garde movements of the time, as well as with modern European and Latin American architecture?
In this second issue, researchers, professors, and professionals in the field of architecture and related disciplines are invited to contribute articles, essays, and works that answer these questions and address:
- The relationship between modern architecture and pre-modern and modern societies.
- Understanding modern architecture through its attitude toward the present, which therefore applies to any architectural work that reflects it, regardless of its historical period.
- Shifting from understanding modern architecture as a style to approaching it as a discourse in construction.
- Overcoming stylistic simplification in modern architecture and incorporating architects and works that responded to modern conceptions by breaking with the past.
- The construction of the modern discourse in architecture.
- The relationship of local modern architecture with emerging avant-gardes worldwide.
