Intimate partner violence and sexual risk behaviors for HIV in men who have sexual relations with men

Introduction: the individual and social vulnerability experienced by same-sex couples gives rise to dynamics of intimate partner violence, different from that of heterosexual couples. These differences are attributable to factors such as social pressure, stigma, and power dynamics in same-sex relationships.
Objective: determine how intimate partner violence in men who have sex with men is related to sexual risk behaviors for HIV.
Material and Methods: descriptive correlational design, with Respondent-driven sampling (RDS), included 224 men over 18 years of age who have sexual relations with men, and who had oral genital intercourse and/or insertive, receptive anal intercourse, or both, in the last 12 months. The Intimate Partner Violence in Gay and Bisexual Men scale and the Sexual Behavior in men who have sexual relations with men scale were used. A Multiple Linear Regression Model was performed with Backward elimination method.
Results: the mean age was 31,80 (SD = 9,00), 73,7% (95% CI; 68, 79) have experienced some type of Intimate Partner Violence, 46,4% (95% CI; 40, 53) identify as a victim and 25,9% (95% CI; 20, 32) as a perpetrator. The multiple linear regression model was significant (F [5,218] = 11,19; p < .001; R2 = .20) and explained 18.6% of the variance.
Conclusions: intimate partner violence influences sexual risk behaviors for HIV in MSM, especially through emotional violence and monitoring behaviors.
