The ecuadorian higher education is based on 3 fundamental functions: teaching, research, and the third mission who was effectively implemented in the country in the mid-twentieth century, as a result of demands from teachers and students who demanded a closer relationship between the university and the people. The Central University of Ecuador in Quito was the first to carry out activities related to society in the country. At the end of the 1970s, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Central University launched the magazine Arquitectura y Sociedad (A&S), which in its first issues carried out a discussion of the formation of the architect and his relationship with society. The objective of this work is to analyze the problems posed by the A&S magazine nº1 and to reflect on the third function of the university, seen in this work as a potential area to establish pedagogical strategies for teachers and students of architecture and urban planning
