Abstract

The article analyzes the crisis and fragmentation of Ecuadorian leftist movements after the fall of the Berlin Wall, arguing that unlike countries such as Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and Venezuela—where theoretical renewal enabled progressive forces to reach government—Ecuador’s left remains trapped in outdated metropolitan frameworks, disconnected from national history, and lacking broad dissemination of critical thought. Quintero identifies three essential challenges for rebuilding a left capable of governing: producing original theories grounded in Andean reality, forging a national-popular identity that links politics and history, and massively spreading critical thinking to build a collective consciousness able to sustain transformative projects. Otherwise, he warns, the Ecuadorian left risks remaining a “museum piece” rather than becoming a unified popular movement with real political power.
