Unilateral premolar extraction in class II patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Case report

Introduction: Orthodontics focuses on correcting dentomaxillofacial alterations, improving both dental alignment and jaw development. In many cases, premolar extractions are used to correct crowding and improve dental aesthetics and functionality. In addition, mouth breathing, which affects craniofacial development, can have short- and long-term consequences on health and quality of life. Objective: This study explores the surgical option of unilateral premolar extraction in patients with Class II malocclusion and mouth breathing, evaluating its clinical applicability and effects on orthodontic treatment. Clinical case presentation: A 45-year-old female patient comes to the orthodontic clinic requesting treatment to correct the alignment of her teeth and improve the aesthetics of her smile. She reported that she has experienced difficulties chewing due to dental malocclusion and her aesthetic concern about the misalignment of the dental midline. Conclusions: The results of the treatment of Class II malocclusion with premolar extraction have been successful, improving both the facial aesthetics and the functionality of the patient.
