Objective: To determine and report the frequency of osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) in dental publications describing cases involving implants in patients receiving bisphosphonate (BP) therapy. Materials and Methods: An analysis and selection of scientific publications reporting the relationship among ONJ, dental implants, and BP therapy was conducted. Results: Implant placement is considered to represent a 3.9 % risk for the development of ONJ in patients undergoing BP therapy. The occurrence of ONJ has been associated with the dose and duration of BP administration, with a frequency ranging from 0.001% to 0.01 %. Conclusion: Although the frequency of ONJ associated with implant loss in patients using BPs is low, it remains a topic of interest because of its health implications for the individual, including implant loss and partial or total loss of the jaws. Therefore, it is essential to develop skills in anamnesis and in the identification of clinical data that may indicate risks of ONJ.
