¿Qué hace a los ecuatorianos modernos diferentes de otros individuos en el planeta?
Keywords:
gene flow, genetic variability, population genetics, high altitude, Ethnic diversityAbstract
This brief analysis aims to answer the question, what makes modern Ecuadorians different from other individuals? And, therefore, how we could use that information for the direct benefit of our population. Under this premise, researchers try to individualize the diagnosis and treatment of diseases according to the Ecuadorian population’s biological and genetic specificities. The author analyzes three indispensable factors: 1) admixture, 2) living at high altitude, and 3) ethnic diversity. Together, these three characteristics establish research lines that allow finding these small biological and genetic differences to identify risk and protective factors for various diseases and intrinsic capacities for adaptation to the environment.
