Radicular cyst: case report and literature review

Radicular cyst is an inflammatory lesion originating from the Mapalssez epithelial remnants in the periodontal ligament. Various theories regarding abscess formation and epithelial stand growth are discussed. Objetive.This paper presents a clinical case report of a radicular cyst and provides a review of the existing literature on this condition. Materials and Methods. Clinical and radiographic examinations were conducted on 63 year old woman who experienced acute pain in the right maxillary first molar. Radiolucent circumscribed areas were observed in relation to the apex of the affected tooth´s roots. Tooth extraction was performed, and inflammatory tissue was obtained for histopathological analysis. Results. The confirmed diagnosis was inflammatory radicular cyst. The discussion explores the theories and characteristics of radicular cysts, as well as, the radiographic and histopathological findings in the case. Differente treatment option are mencioned, ranging from endontic therapy to exodontia with bone regeneration, depending on the size and extent of the cyst. Conclusions. A favorable outcome was demsotrated following extraction and the use of hydroxyapatite based bone graft to facilitate tissue regeneration.
