Dental caries is one of the most common diseases in the pediatric population. Its development is associated with several factors, including high sugar intake and poor oral hygiene. Dental fissures are particularly vulnerable areas because they promote biofilm accumulation and increase the risk of enamel demineralization. For this reason, it is necessary to apply effective preventive measures that help reduce the occurrence of carious lesions in children. The objective of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of sustained fluoride release in dental fissures as a strategy to prevent enamel demineralization in pediatric patients. To this end, a narrative review of scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025 was conducted using databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and Latindex 2.0. The studies were selected according to their relevance, timeliness, and direct relationship with the topic addressed. The reviewed findings show that materials capable of releasing fluoride in a sustained manner contribute to enamel remineralization, reduce bacterial activity, and provide prolonged protection in highly susceptible areas. Consequently, this alternative may be considered a promising preventive strategy for the pediatric population, as it strengthens enamel and lowers the risk of dental caries. However, its effectiveness depends on proper clinical application, professional follow-up, and the individual conditions of each patient.
