Granular cell tumor: case report

Granule cell tumor (GCT) is a rare benign neoplasm of uncertain origin that is usually located in the head and neck region. Objective: To describe the clinical approach to a granular cell tumor located on the tongue with one year of evolution. Materials and methods: An 18-year-old female patient presented with lesions on the right lateral border of the tongue. On clinical inspection, a single nodular lesion was observed at the level of the lateral dorsum of the tongue (right side), similar in color to that of the mucosa, approximately 2cm in size, sessile base, firm consistency, smooth texture, regular contours, raised edges and integral surface. Results: An excisional biopsy of the lesion was performed and the lesion was sent for histopathological study, which confirmed the diagnosis of granular cell tumor. Conclusions: Granular cell tumor should be diagnosed both clinically and histologically. As it is an active proliferative lesion, a complete surgical excision must be performed. Therefore, follow-up should be regular to allow for adequate management in case of recurrence.
